Chatchai Puipia (Thailand) - Something Smells Around Here

Chatchai Puipia (born 1964) received his B.F.A. in painting from the
Faculty of Painting, Sculpture and Graphic Arts at Silpakorn University;
since 1985 he has participated in numerous group exhibitions in
Thailand and has received a number of prizes and awards in national art
competitions. While the relationship between fire and water is explored
in much of his work, his recent large self-portraits indicate a shift
toward his inner conscience. He currently lives in Tokyo, Japan.
Chatchai Puipia exhibits three provocative works, Toe-Sucking is Best
(1994), Mae Chow Woi! (1994), and Something Smells Around Here
(1994), all paintings that reflect Puipia’s frustration and anguish at aspects
of Thailand’s newly industrializing society, focusing on a materialism
which is leading to fake happiness and demeaning superficiality.
