In 1958, French Art Informel critic Michel Tapié and Japanese Gutai leader Jiro Yoshihara introduced their utopian project for framing an international discourse of postwar art in an exhibition entitled The International Art of a New Era: U.S.A., Japan, Europe. Ming Tiampo, co-curator of Electrifying Art, will explore the two leaders’ experiments and exchanges between 1957 and 1965, as well as the complex political issues surrounding the interaction between France and Japan.
Co-sponsored by La Maison Française, the Institute of Fine Arts, and the Grey Art Gallery. An event of Asian Contemporary Art Week. For information, call 212/998-8750.
